Interior of home damaged by a flood water full of goods Interior of home damaged by a flood water full of goods

Water damage can lead to chaos at home, causing structural issues and leading to mold growth. With proper precautions, however, you can minimize your risk of water damage!

Here are some of our best tips to keep your home free of moisture-related issues before you need water damage restoration services:

Inspect Plumbing Regularly
Perform regular inspections of your plumbing system, checking for leaks, drips or signs of water damage. Small plumbing problems can easily spiral into larger issues, so start repair work as soon as you notice anything amiss with your system.

Ensure Proper Drainage
Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water from seeping into your home's foundation! Clean gutters and downspouts regularly, removing debris and ensuring that water flows freely away from the house.

Consider investing in professional lawn grading. It can help direct water away from vulnerable areas, like your home’s foundation, ensuring the structure’s longevity.

Invest in a Sump Pump
A sump pump can also help clear water from around your foundation, which curbs your potential for developing leaks that then ruin walls, ceilings and floors.

Once you have a sump pump, make sure to inspect it regularly. A malfunctioning pump can cause lots of damage, such as flooding during heavy rains.

Find Your Water Main Shutoff Valve
Familiarize yourself with the location of the main water shutoff valve in your home. In case of a burst pipe or sudden water leak, knowing how to turn off the water supply quickly can prevent further water damage.

At the very least, knowing where your main water shutoff valve is can help you reduce the extent of the damage!

Call for Backup
Despite your best efforts, water damage can still occur from all manner of things—unforeseen circumstances, severe weather events or even plumbing mishaps. When faced with water damage, it’s always best to call in a professional for help!

That’s what our team at SERVPRO® of Greater Waco is here to do. We can remove standing water, evaluate and repair structural damage, dry affected areas and address mold and mildew issues.

Congratulations on the new home! Now it’s time to start making personal touches to your new space.  Here’s a list of tools so you can accomplish any home maintenance or DIY project.

-An old school curved claw hammer- Go for solid steel so it will last forever.

-Multibit screwdriver- Save space and still accomplish basic task with a screwdriver that keeps all of the bits in the handle.

-A cordless drill/driver- Whether it’s hanging a photo or installing new cabinets, a cordless drill/driver is a timesaver.

-An assortment of nails and screws- A smell set can run as low as $5 and really help out in a pinch.

-An Allen wrench or hex key set- A new home typically means new furniture and lots of assembly.  A hex key set is exactly what you need to put it all together.

-A stud finder- No, I’m not talking about your husband, an actual stud finder.  Hanging a new TV or shelf?  You’ll definitely need one.  Go for the nice one that can even detect live wiring. SHOCKING!

-A drain snake- The first time you get a really bad clog and you’ll be thanking me for saving you a couple hundred dollars on having a plumber come out. This thing gets what a plunger just can push out.

-A pipe wrench- Plumbing issues are inevitable over time and you’ll want to be prepared with one of the most basic tools needed.  Go for an adaptable model for more versatility.

-Hand-held sander- Wanting to country chic the dresser you found at a local flea market? You’ll need a hand-held sander.

-An adjustable wrench- Don’t always use wrenches but need one in a pinch?  A good adjustable will hold you over.

-A level- Everything from hanging a photo, replacing flooring or hanging a new TV, will all need a level.  A good one will last a lifetime.

-Plunger- Just like a drain snake, you can save yourself a lot of plumbing headaches and money with a plunger.

-A socket set- Not only can a socket set be used on home appliances, it’s great for automotive repairs.

-Locking tape measure- No need for an extra hand when a good tape measure locks in place.

-A caulk gun- Leaky window or shower seal? Caulk it!

-Putty Knife- Need to patch up small holes? Do it yourself with putty and good putty knife.

-Flashlight- You’ll need a quality flashlight when you have your first power outage or checking a breaker box late at night.

-A portable shop vac- A 4 gallon is perfect for keeping in the closet but a lifesaver when you have a larger mess or any flooding.

Water Restoration Equipment Explained

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

A group of air movers Got water damage? We can help! Call SERVPRO® of Greater Waco 254-224-5999

When you experience a water loss, you may be wondering, “what is all of this equipment for and why is it being placed?”. Here are a few answers to the what and why of water restoration.

Why is the equipment being placed?

Equipment is placed within regulations set by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification S500, which is the industry procedural standard for drying.  It’s also who our technicians and staff get their Water Damage Restoration certification through. In the simplest terms, it’s the science behind drying and restoration.

Our technicians evaluate the space, plug all of the information into the varying formulas and scenarios then determine where and for how long the equipment should be placed based upon the conditions.  This can vary due to atmospheric changes; how wet a space is and equipment angle placement. Adjustments may need to be done daily, which is why our technicians conduct daily equipment monitoring to fine tune everything.

What equipment is being placed?

In most cases, you’ll have air movers strategically placed to provide direct air flow.  These are positioned for optimal circulation and water movement, so it’s imperative that these aren’t touched during the drying process except by the technician.  Turning them off can also prolong the drying process and in the end, cost more money.

Another common piece of equipment is a dehumidifier.  This machine simply removes the moisture in the air and can help prevent mildew by extracting water from the air.

In some cases, you’ll see an air scrubber. This machine is great for removing odor, dust and air pollution from the air. Unlike an air purifier, an air scrubber can remove particles from the air and the surrounding surface not just airborne particles.

We also have several types of moisture and thermal imagery sensors, 360-degree imagery software and other pieces of equipment that assist SERVPRO of Greater Waco.

The one thing to keep in mind is that these are industrial strength machines, which means they come with industrial strength noise, all in an effort to prevent secondary damage and save you money in the long run. We also work with insurance carriers to create a custom drying plan to fit your home’s individual needs.

Facts About Thunderstorms

Blue thunderstorm with white lightening Got storm damage? Call SERVPRO® of Greater Waco 254-224-5999

Spring in Texas is also thunderstorm season with Texas experiencing 50 to 60 days a year of thunderstorms.  Here are some facts about thunderstorms that you may not know.

-The US experiences 10,000 thunderstorms a year with 10% being classified as severe causing damage or tornadoes.

-The average size of a thunderstorm is 15 miles wide and will usually last about 30 minutes.

-Most lightening happens in the summer but can happen at any time with an estimated 25 million strikes a year in the US.

-There are anywhere from 1,800 to 2,000 thunderstorms happening at any given moment.

-Tororo, Uganda is home to the most thunder 251 days a year.

-There are several types of thunderstorms with most being single celled that dissipates within half an hour.  Another type is a multicell that is usually created by several single cell thunderstorms combining. With these, you usually see hail and gusty winds. Squall lines are an intense line of thunderstorm that are usually found ahead of a cold front and can span hundreds of miles causing winds in excess of 70 mph. The strongest type is a supercell, which we are very familiar with in Texas, because they produce tornadoes.

-Lightening from a thunderstorm is hotter than the surface of the sun.

-The thunder produced from lightening is created by the air heating up quickly creating a sonic boom.  All lightening creates thunder but you may be too far away to hear it.

-One cumulous cloud can weigh more than 1 million pounds and is exponentially higher as it builds for a thunderstorm.

-Thunderstorms need moisture, lift and warm air that can rise quickly, to form.

-Warm, humid conditions are the best for forming a thunderstorm and why you usually see them during the spring and summer.

-A thunderstorm that produces snow instead of rain is called a thundersnow.

-Neptune, Venus, Saturn and Jupiter all produce thunderstorms.

Just remember to seek shelter immediately if a thunderstorm comes your way and avoid going under trees.

How to Get Kids Involved with Cleanup

2/24/2022 (Permalink)

Lego Bricks with the Servpro of Greater Waco logo Need a Covid-19 cleaning? Call SERVPRO® of Greater Waco 254-224-5999

Kids are amazing but they aren’t the cleanest creatures.  Check out these ideas for getting your minions involved with even the most mundane task.

-Jam out! For younger children, create a clean-up song going over each step of the cleaning process to a rhythm.  For older kids, turn on a mix of their music and stuff from back in the day.  Use it as a chance to bond and embarrass yourself on the high notes while getting chores done.

-Break it down. A large mess can be overwhelming, so break it down into smaller manageable tasks.  Start with picking up all of the books or an item of certain colors or materials until the space is completely picked up.

-Make it competitive.  For a single child, have them beat the clock on a task completion.  For multiple kids, have them race against each other to see how fast a task can be completed or who can clean up the most of something.  Reward with an extra special snack or picking out the next meal for lunch or dinner.  It also turns into a lesson on time management.

-Create a reward chart. For younger children, stickers are a great visual to see how far they have to go before they receive a reward.  For older kids, create a visual “bank account” where they can see how much money they’ve earned and how much they’ve deducted for rewards.  They can also see how much various task “pay”, which creates an incentive for even the worst of chores and house hold tasks.

-Show them how it’s done.  Younger children may not understand how or what you want done so do a couple repetitions and have them do them right back to you to demonstrate how you want the task completed.

-Have everyone do tasks. Set a timer where everyone stops and cleans for a set mount of time.  It gets the whole family involved and breaks down time into smaller increments of work time.

-Go into the science of germs.  Explain how if things aren’t cleaned how germs are spread.  Explain the importance of hygiene and a clean environment.  Explaining the cause and effect of cleaning can go a long way.

It's Time to Replace Your Dishwasher

An image of a dishwasher with the text "It's Time to Replace Your Dishwasher" with the SERVPRO of Greater Waco logo Need emergency water restoration services? Call SERVPRO® of Greater Waco 254-224-5999

Dishwashers have been a common appliance since the 1970s. By 2012, 75% of homes had one. So, how do you know when it’s about time to you to replace your best, time-saving, friend?

-It’s 10 years or older. Most dishwashers last anywhere from 7 to 12 years with an average lifespan of 9.5 years which means at 10 years components are worn, it’s not energy efficient and it may be costing you more money to keep it than replace it.

-It’s not ENERGY STAR certified- Energy Star didn’t go into effect until January of 2011 which means any dishwasher purchased before then is not efficient and isn’t certified to be.  Make sure to find not only one that claims to be energy star certified but also bears the label.

-It’s making weird noises- The most obvious thing is that it’s making an absurd amount of noise or it just sounds “off”.  Clicking or pinging can be easy indicators of broken components.

-It doesn’t turn on- Depending on the age of the unit, it may be more cost effect to replace it than getting it fixed.

-Rust on the inside or outside- If there is metal and water and it’s rusting then you have a leak somewhere.

-Water doesn’t drain-It’s either clocked with food debris or the mechanism that activates the drain is broken.

-Dishes come out cold- Dishes should always be warm to the touch and look and feel clean.

-Dishes aren’t clean.  This can be an indicator of something as simple as a clogged filter and get as complex as water pressure and temperature issues. Either way, more issues and more money out the door when you can just get a new unit.

- Broken Latch- A broken latch will prevent the unit from getting a proper seal leading to leaks, water not getting up to the proper temperature and dirty dishes.

-Dishwasher under or over fills- Overflowing can indicate several potential issues such as the float switch assembly has gone bad or is sticking.  It can also be a sign that an electrical switch has gone out while underfilling could be a sign that the inlet valve has gone out. Either way, combined with age, it could be a sign that it’s time to replace the whole unit.

Space Heater Safety

Space Heater Safety text with the SERVPRO of Greater Waco Logo Need fire damage cleanup? Call SERVPRO® of Greater Waco 254-224-5999

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, space heaters cause about a third of all winter house fires and 80 percent of winter heating fire deaths.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 25,000 residential fires are caused by space heaters.  While they are an economical means of heating smaller spaces and providing supplemental heat, they can be incredibly dangerous.  Make sure to follow these safety tips for a fire free winter.

-Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable objects.

-When purchasing a space heater, look for one with an automatic safety shutoff that prevents it from overheating.

-Unplug space haters when not in use.

-Make sure to inspect space heaters power chords and avoid using one with a damaged cord.

-Always place space heaters on flat, level ground.

-Consider purchasing a space heater with a tip over protection system that will turn off the heater if it gets tipped over.

-Never leave a space heater unattended while sleeping or around children.

-Look for space heaters with a cool touch feature.  This prevents burns if someone accidently brushes up against the heater or while trying to move the unit.

-Adjustable thermostat heaters are great for keeping a space comfortable and safe.

-Keep space heaters out of high traffic areas like walkways and doorways.

-Make sure to read the owner’s manual when purchasing a new space heater.

-Do not plug space heaters into extension cords or power strips.

-Check the label and make sure your space heater has been tested by a nationally recognized testing lab.  Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is the most common.

-Make sure to not step on the cord and do not run it under rugs, bedding or other furniture.

-Always keep space heaters away from water to prevent shocks or a potential electrical fire.

-To prevent overheating, only use the space heater for short periods of time.

-Only use space heaters to heat a space.  Make sure to not attempt to dry clothing, cook or ignite other materials.

Water Heater Maintenance

Water heaters should last anywhere from 6 to 13 years with most warranties covering the tank and parts for 6 years.  With a little basic maintenance, you can ensure your water heater last as long as possible.  Here are a few tips on maintaining your water heater.

-Check the Pressure Relief Valve or Temperature Pressure Relief (PRV or TPR). Turn off the electric or gas, depending on your water heater, and the cold-water inlet. Put a bucket under neath the discharge pipe and lift the lever on the valve.  If water isn’t released when you lift the lever, then replace the valve. If water continues to flow after testing then you’ll need to replace the valve as well.  Replacement is as simple as draining the tank, unscrewing the valve and replacing the old one while making sure to sure use Teflon tape on the threads.

-Drain the tank and check for sediment. Let the tank drain until it is running clear and is clear of any sediment.  Sediment can cause clogged lines and reduce the life and efficiency of a water heater. Check and make sure there aren’t any additional leaks around the drain valve and that it’s not loose or spinning.  If so, completely drain and replace the valve.

-Check the temperature. You can save money on your energy bill by lowering the temperature as little as 10 degrees.  Simply remove the temperature dial cover and adjust the dial to 120 degrees with a flat head screw driver. Most water heaters come set at 140 degrees.  It’s recommended that you adjust the dial to the lowest setting if leaving for more than a few days.

-Insulate your water heater. A ridged piece of insulation, or bottom board, can save you anywhere from 4-9% off of your energy bill. To know if you need to insulate your water heater, check the R value on the water heater sticker. If the value is below 24 then it needs to be insulated. An insulating blanket is the simplest solution and comes with easy installation instructions.

-Check the anode rod. The anode rod is the long metal magnesium, aluminum or aluminum/zinc alloy that attracts corrosive elements in the water. While it’s recommended that you check the anode rode, realize that by changing it yourself, you may void the warranty.  Before replacing make sure to check your warranty or contact the manufacturer before trying to change it yourself. Most anode rods need to be checked every one to three years and replaced when it is consumed more than 50 percent. By checking the rod, you avoid corrosion inside of the tank and can extend the life of your water heater up to double the expected lifespan.

Hurricane season is in full swing in Central Texas, with September being the most historically active month. Hurricane season runs June through November in Texas. If the most recent winter storm taught us anything, it’s better to be over prepared than not.

Central Texas isn’t right by the coast, so why be prepared? While Central Texas may not be hit by a hurricane itself, the area is still prone to higher-than-normal rain, flooding and the same conditions that cause tornadoes, can still produce severe storms.

Here are some ways that you can be prepared if severe weather hits your home:

  1. Have trees trimmed that could potentially damage your home.
  2. Make sure to have non-perishable food and a can opener.
  3. Make sure to have at least one gallon of water per day, per person.
  4. Make sure to have a first aide kit and at least a week worth of any medication
  5. If your home is prone to flooding, sandbags are great to have.
  6. Make sure to have at least a week worth of pet supplies
  7. Make sure cell phones are fully charged. You may want to consider purchasing external battery packs for easy recharging.
  8. Consider putting important documents in a water proof bag
  9. Have extra blankets on hand.
  10. Secure lawn chairs, tables and other decorations before severe weather hits.
  11. Make sure to have an evacuation plan.

Mold 101 text with the SERVPRO of Greater Waco logo Need a mold inspection? Call SERVPRO® of Greater Waco 254-224-5999

With the recent rain, the calls for mold inspections have gone through the roof.  At SERVPRO of Greater Waco we offer a complimentary microbial growth inspection.  So, what is that?

  • We start by checking the conditions of the home to see if they are conducive to microbial growth. Things like temperature, recent water damage and humidity are primary indicators.
  • We check any places that moisture could accumulate visually and with a moisture meter. Places like under your sinks, cracks in the walls near the exterior etc.
  • We check with you to see what may have led you to believe mold could be present in the home, which helps us narrow down possible causes and where it could be coming from.

Things to keep in mind about mold:

  • It’s everywhere. There are always mold spores in the air that float in and out of the home. The EPA doesn’t currently have a list for an acceptable amount of mold spores.  What this means for you, is if an atmospheric test is done then you may get back a long list of mold types but it doesn’t mean they are concentrated enough to cause harm, just that they were present at the time of testing.
  • Mold testing can cost anywhere from $750-1500.
  • Mold remediation doesn’t remove 100% of mold spores because they are a naturally occurring.
  • Mold spores only form actual mold when they land on something moist. So, by keeping your home dry, you can keep your home safe.

Rodent Ruckus with SERVPRO® of Greater Waco

1/27/2021 (Permalink)

Chewed through water lines caused by rodents SERVPRO® of Greater Waco was able to help this Waco residence who had water damage due to rats chewing through pipes in their walls

We have seen in influx of calls from rats causing chaos and chewing through PEX and PVC pipes within home walls. Vermin can use any small exterior holes, as small as ¼ inch, to get inside.

What should you do when you discover an unwelcome rodent guest?

First, contact an exterminator.  While you may think you only have one, rats tend to travel in packs because they are social creatures. An exterminator can find the best method to relocate or dispose of them.  An easy way to lure them out yourself is by setting out small bowls of water near their entry points, since they have been known to chew through pipes to get to a water source.

Next, call a plumber to address any plumbing issues that may be present. The exterminator and plumber can also help find where any rodents are sneaking in and recommend a remediation plan to prevent further issues.

Now that you’ve gotten rid of the little pest, it’s time to clean up after them. A major issue caused by rats is their droppings, which can heavily contaminate a space.  SERVPRO of Greater Waco offers an insulation vacuum service that sucks out contaminated blown in insulation.  Our technicians then go in and clean and sanitize the space, while our reconstruction team comes in and replaces the insulation.

Finally, it’s time to tackle any potential water damage and mold. Our certified IICRC water mitigation specialist will assess all damage and create a custom mitigation and repair plan best suited for your home or business and get your home back to, “Like it never even happened.”

Waco Area -Sports Retailer

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

public bathroom with a murky puddle on the tile floor Sewage is gross, let us handle the cleanup.

After a couple of days of heavy rain, we were contacted by a local sports retailer regarding a drain backup. Upon inspection of the bathroom, we noted that sewage had come up out of the floor drains. This created unsanitary conditions (and it didn’t smell very nice) so it was necessary for the retailer to close the restrooms to their customers until the issue was remedied. We wanted to get these folks access to the bathrooms as soon as possible so we quickly donned appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and got to work extracting the pooled sewage from the tiled floor. Once extracted, our crew followed up with steam sterilization of the floor and an antimicrobial was applied.

According to the CDC, steam sterilization is the most widely used and most dependable method of sterilization. The use of moist heat in the form of saturated steam is nontoxic, inexpensive and should be utilized on all critical and semi-critical surfaces that are heat and moisture resistant.

Tips on Conserving Water

8/19/2020 (Permalink)

Closeup view of clean standing water If we all do our part, together we can make a difference.

As you probably already know, water conservation has been a trending topic for the past 50 years. With the amount of drought the United States has experienced during that time period and the recent spike in drinking water purchases due to the pandemic, it’s pretty safe to say that water conservation is needed now more than ever.

Here are some tips that www.greensourcedfw.org suggests for residential water conservation:

  • Reuse water whenever possible (example: pour old drinking water into your house plants)
  • Repair leaky faucets
  • Take shorter showers
  • Turn off the water while shaving, washing hands or brushing your teeth
  • Use cold water when possible
  • Mulch all planted areas
  • Water the lawn with one inch of water per week
  • Water between 10:00p.m. and 6:00a.m.

Emergency Ready Kit

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

A window overlooking the street in front of a home. Preparing ahead will be helpful in the event of an emergency.

Emergencies are never planned and if you are lacking basic needs and supplies, survival becomes a little more complicated. This is where a disaster kit comes in handy. For example, if your home is damaged due to a fire, an emergency kit would have items to help you through at least the next 72 hours. An emergency kit can be kept in your car, at home and at work.

We went to FEMA at  Ready.gov/kit to see what we can put in a basic disaster supplies kit and we’d like to share the list they provided to help build yours!

  • A basic emergency supplies kit could include:
  • Water (one per person, for at least three days)
  • Food (3 day supply of non-perishable items)
  • Weather radio that is battery powered or hand cranked
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Batteries
  • Whistle
  • Dust mask
  • Plastic sheets and duct tape
  • Wet wipes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation purposes)
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Manual can opener
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and backup battery pack

Some additional tips they provide to help maintain your kit so it is ready in the case of an emergency are:

  • Store canned items in a cool, dry place and boxed food in tightly closed containers
  • Replace expired items and as you do, and update your kit to meet the needs of your family.

Water and Swimming Safety

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

It’s the summer time and many families are piling into their vehicles and heading for pools, lakes and beaches. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning with two of these being children aged 14 or under. Drowning is ranked 5th in leading cause of death of unintentional injury in the United States. Individuals who are treated in emergency departments due to drowning require hospitalization and their injuries could lead to severe brain damage and long term disabilities such as memory problems, learning disabilities and permanent loss of basic functioning.

Prevention

The CDC provides some research based tips on how we can prevent drowning accidents:

  • Supervise children in or around water

(Preschool children should be provided with “touch supervision” which means that the adult can reach the child at all times.)

  • Use the buddy system

(Swim with a buddy and swim at sites where lifeguards are available when possible)

  • Seizure Disorder Safety

(For individuals with known seizure disorders, provide one-on-one supervision around water. Consider showers over a bathtub for bathing and always wear life jackets when boating.)

  • Learn to swim

(Swimming skills help and reduces the risk of drowning among children aged 1-4 years)

  • Learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Only use life jackets as safety devices as pool noodles or tubes are not designed to keep swimmers safe
  • Avoid alcohol and other mind-altering substances.
  • Don’t let swimmers hyperventilate before swimming or try to hold their breath underwater for long periods of time.

(This can cause them to blackout and drown)

  • Understand how to prevent recreational water illnesses
  • Check local weather conditions and forecast prior to swimming or boating

It’s important to follow current guidelines for social distancing and mask use as required by local and state government at this time in addition to increasing awareness and vigilance around swimming pools and water. Keep yourselves safe this summer and check out www.cdc.gov for more information.

Yearly Home Maintenance

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

A dining table standing in a puddle in the middle of a wooden floored room Invest time to perform regular maintenance on your home.

Your home is an investment so it is essential to maintain it every year by performing regular maintenance on it. Tackling so many tasks at once might feel overwhelming so scheduling them to be completed throughout the year will help ensure that your house is running in tip top shape. An article by The New York Times  gives a basic rundown of some of the things you should check on your grounds, outside and inside of the house.

Here are some of those tasks that if not maintained properly, could lead to a water event and damage in your home:

Cleaning gutters: they are usually out of sight, but they must be cleaned at least twice a year (or more, depending on trees around your house); check for damage and always, always, ALWAYS be safe while using the ladder.

HVAC systems: call an HVAC service provider to asses your system and check for damage.

Water heater: check valves, check for leaks, drain and remove buildup and turn down the temperature

Plumbing: give your pipes a visual check-up and ensure that there are no signs of leaks, and check faucet for drips. Fix what you can and call a plumber for their expertise for more serious concerns.

Water supply lines: toilets, dishwasher, washing machine and sinks have supply lines that might need replacing. These can burst causing extensive damage if they are old and damaged

Just as our bodies need regular check-ups and maintenance, houses do too. Schedule maintenance throughout the year and check each off one at a time to keep your home in tip-top shape.

How We Choose A Drying Method

8/23/2019 (Permalink)

Drywall and insulation had to be removed before this wall could be dried.

With advancements in drying procedures and equipment, almost any type of material can be dried after it has been affected due to water damage. Our technicians consider several factors in their decision to dry or not dry a material; contamination of the material, damage, and cost of drying compared to replacement.

Contamination: This is the first factor that our restoration technicians take into consideration. For example, if a porous object or material has been affected by Category 3 it cannot be thoroughly cleaned and must be disposed of. Safeguarding our clients and employees from health hazards is our primary concern when assessing contamination of materials.

Damage: If materials have become damaged beyond the possibility of full repair after being dried, they are removed from the structure and the remaining materials are dried thoroughly before rebuild. An example of this would be insulation and drywall damaged by a water leak. If it cannot be dried to a preloss state, demolition and disposal of the affected material would be necessary.

Cost: Finally, our technicians will always consider the cost when determining if an object should be dried or replaced. We will always communicate with our clients and interested parties regarding whether it is more cost effective to dry materials than it would be to replace them. For example, if flooring has become wet but can be salvaged by drying, it would be more cost effective to dry it than to replace the whole flooring of the house. Ultimately, it is important that it cost less to dry than it would be to replace an item.

Once these factors have been considered when deciding whether to dry or not dry an item, our technicians can begin the restoration process and make it “Like it never even happened.” ®

Categories of Water Damage

8/16/2019 (Permalink)

Visible mold growth in carpet and carpet padding.

When we receive a call for water damage, we ensure to document damage that is in the home. We categorize the damage in three different ways; pre-existing damage, primary damage or secondary damage. This is an important part of the restoration process and we must assess this before our technicians can begin to work. On the affected structure. We will then provide this information to you and your insurance company (and any other interested parties).

The first type of damage we look for is called pre-existing damage. This is damage that existed before the water event that we were dispatched to assess. This is often mildew or mold from a previous water event.  This could also be shown as carpet delamination (separation of the carpet fibers and their backing membrane) or water stains on materials in the home that are not currently wet.

The second type of damage is primary damage. This is damage that is direct result of the fire or water event. It occurs immediately when materials are affected by the cause of the loss.  It could mean damage to the structure itself and to its contents, such as furniture.

The third type of damage we encounter is secondary damage. In the case of a water event, this could occur when materials are left wet for an extended period of time and/or high levels of humidity remaining within the structure. This encourages the chance of mold and mildew growth and changes in the materials of the structure as well which could compromise its integrity. When there is fire damage, secondary damage can result from particulates and ash being carried throughout a structure from the movement of people in the home into areas that were not initially affected.

When dealing with the resulting damage of a water event, know that the experts at SERVPRO® of Greater Waco will work quickly to avoid any further damage and get your home or place of business to a pre-water event state. Avoid secondary damage and call us without delay: 254-224-5999.

The Three Categories of Water

8/12/2019 (Permalink)

This would be a Category 3 loss. You would expect to see our technicians in full personal protective equipment.

When we receive a dispatch for a home or business that has suffered water damage, one of the first things we identify in our initial inspection is the Water Category. It is important to assess what type of water caused the damage in order to proceed with the appropriate procedure for restoration.

Category 1: Is clean water from a clean source that cannot cause sickness if someone comes into contact with it. This could be water from a broken supply line, or sink overflow containing no detergents. Falling rainwater also falls into this category. It is water that does not contain any additives or contaminants. Cat 1 water cannot be standing for a long time and the materials that have come in contact with the water are clean and well maintained. Once we have identified that the water is Cat 1, we can begin the drying process and it is possible to restore the structure by rapid drying in place and replacing any permanently damaged materials. If there is odor present, it is indicative that the water is no longer Category 1.

Category 2: Cat 2 water is best described as water that has chemicals, biological or physical contamination that if consumed or contacted by humans would cause sickness. This includes discharge water from dishwashers, washing machines, a toilet bowl overflow containing urine, and aquarium leaks. If a water loss is found to be a Cat 2, there are procedures that technicians must proceed with before drying. Affected carpet padding, and insulation will be removed, and materials will be cleaned. An application of anti-microbial agents on affected areas can prevent growth of mold and mildew.

Category 3: The most contaminated level of water is Cat 3 water. This is water that contains pathogens that could severely affect humans that come into contact with it. Examples of Cat 3 water sources are sewer water, flood water, and toilet overflow containing fecal matter. The procedures in handling a Cat 3 water loss are numerous due to the importance of maintaining the health and safety of the workers. It is necessary for technicians to be equipped with personal protective equipment.  All highly porous materials that have come into contact with contaminated water would be removed and disposed of including carpet, carpet padding, wood, drywall and insulation.

By ensuring that the water category is appropriately identified, technicians can ensure that the best procedures are utilized while also keeping everyone in the home and on the jobsite safe. Call the experts at SERVPRO® of Greater Waco at 254-224-5999 to help you restore your home or business, regardless of the water category.

Taking Action On A Water Leak

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Use of a bucket to catch water from a leak is a temporary fix. As seen here, mold will begin to grow due to increased humidity in the space.

Water leaks are often unexpected, arising from a plumbing issue, HVAC malfunction or even storm damage to your home or business. You might stumble upon a puddle of water or a stain on the ceiling that clues you in that a problem exists. A leak may not even be visible but you realize something is amiss due to an unexpected increase in your water bill. Once you have been able to investigate and find the source of the leak, it is imperative that you take action as soon as possible to correct the issue. Ignoring a water leak or temporarily catching water in a container can still result in damage to your home.  Increased humidity in the air and direct contact with water will cause structural damage and it can spread into initially non-affected areas.

If you find that your home is experiencing a leak or you have discovered water damage but cannot locate the source, we highly advise calling a plumber to remedy the issue as soon as possible. Once a leak has been repaired, our technicians at SERVPRO of Greater Waco can begin the drying process and restore your home or place of business to its preloss condition.

Remember, don’t wait on repairing water leaks, and call SERVPRO of Greater Waco at 254-224-5999 so we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Indoor Humidity Can Increase During Summer Months

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Excess moisture can damage wood in your home.

As the summer temperatures begin to rise, you will notice that you may not be sweating but feeling sticky nonetheless. The reason behind this is that the hot summer air tends to hold more humidity as opposed to cold air in the winter. Humidity is the amount of moisture or water vapor present in the air. You would expect this muggy feeling while you are outdoors but not so much once you are indoors. If the humidity inside your home is too high, it increases the chances of mold and bacteria to grow and may aggravate allergies or asthma symptoms. Too much moisture in the air can also affect any wood furniture and wood structures.

If the humidity level is found to be above 60% for a prolonged period of time, it could lead to damage in your home. The recommended optimal range of humidity is from 30%-60% and can be achieved by making some simple changes such as closing exterior doors and using the A/C. Using fans and keeping interior doors open will increase ventilation and help with air circulation. Ensuring the use of the bathroom exhaust fan will also help remove moisture from the air.

If you find that your home continues to remain humid and have concerns regarding the moisture level, mold growth or water damage, give us a call at 254-224-5999.

Water Categorization

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

This home in Waco suffered a water loss that was classified as Category 3. This home had roughly 3 inches of sewage water flow through it.

In the event that you require SERVPRO® of Greater Waco to provide you with fire and water cleanup and restoration, you may hear the terms CAT 1-3 and water category and wonder what our franchise technicians may be referring to. During our initial phone call with a client, a question we will ask is “What is the source and condition of the water?” Understanding as much as possible about the water that is present in the water damage will make it easier for us to plan on the quickest, most cost-effective way of cleaning and restoring your home so that the end result is "Like it never even happened."

Knowing the source, the condition of the water and being aware of how long water has been allowed to remain standing in the building helps us categorize the water loss as either CAT 1, 2, or 3 based on IICRC screening requirements.

Category 1 (CAT 1): “clean water” Water from a clean source with no substantial risk of causing sickness or discomfort. Has no odor. Examples: broken water supply lines, tub/sink overflows with no contaminants and appliance malfunctions involving water supply lines.

Category 2 (CAT 2): “gray water” Water that has a significant degree of chemical, biological and/or physical contamination. Can potentially cause sickness or discomfort. Examples: aquarium leaks, waterbed leaks, toilet bowl overflows (containing urine), dishwasher or clothes washer discharges and water that enters the structure from hydrostatic pressure (from below grade).

Category 3 (CAT 3): “black water” Water intrusion resulting from a grossly unsanitary source or carries pathogenic (disease causing) agents. Examples: discharge from toilets that originate from beyond the toilet trap (from the sewer or septic system) and intrusions from the surface of ground water into the structure (flood waters).

At SERVPRO® of Greater Waco we prioritize the health and safety of our workers and occupants regardless of the level of contamination. Call us 24/7 at 254-224-5999 and let us help you get your home or business restored "Like it never even happened."

Winter Weather Can Lead to Frozen Pipes

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

This water supply line in a China Spring, TX crawlspace froze during the recent cold snap. Make sure all exposed pipes are wrapped at a minimum.

As winter closes in, your thoughts are probably on football, the upcoming holiday season, or spending time with family. Although these are great things to think about, winter can also bring about freezing temperatures that can cause dangerous roadways or frozen pipes at your home. Frozen pipes can cause a major disaster at your home or property, but with a little thought you can help prevent a major incident.

Exposed pipes are the generally the most susceptible to freezing. These pipes are typically found outside your home, or in colder areas like attics, garages, basements, or kitchen cabinets. A burst pipe can cause substantial damage to your home if not addressed in a timely manner. The American Red Cross has outlined a few steps you can take to help prevent pipes from freezing.

  • Completely drain water from sprinkler and swimming pool lines and outside hoses.
  • Keep kitchen cabinets open so warm air can be near any plumbing
  • Let water drip from faucets when it is extremely cold outside
  • Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature all hours of the day

A water damage is not uncommon due to winter weather. Spend some of your thoughts this winter on your home and preventing a water loss. But do know that SERVPRO of Greater Waco is ready to help if necessary 24/7 & 365. Give us a call 254-224-5999

The Categories of Water Part 1

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

Not every water damage is the same. There are many different ways that water can damage not only your home, but anything you have in your home. When restoring a water loss, not only is the source and extent of the damage a factor, so is the type of water that caused the damage. There are 3 categories of water to consider when dealing with a water damage. Here are some details for each category:

Category 1 water is clean water. It is drinkable water. Water that comes out of a faucet is an example of Category 1 water. Category 1 water can change into Category 2 water quite quickly. Water that leaks onto a dirty floor, or that drains through insulation can easily change the water category from clean to dirty. SERVPRO of Greater Waco is your water damage specialist and we have a highly trained staff that is educated on the appropriate steps to asses and correctly determine the water class for your Waco area water loss.

The Categories of Water Part 2

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

This is an example of a category 3 water loss in the Waco area. The vapor barrier did its job and trapped all the moisture under it.

Category 2 water is also known as gray water, and has a significant amount of contamination in it. This water should not be consumed. An example of category 2 water is soapy water that may leak out of a dishwasher or washing machine and get on the floor or carpet. Another example could be a toilet that is flushed but then overflows with water containing urine. If the water contains feces, it would then move into category 3 and be considered grossly contaminated. Generally speaking, if category 2 water has affected your home, the steps necessary to sanitize and dry your home are more extensive than those from a category 1 loss.

The final category of water is category 3 water which is also called black water. Storm water, overflowing toilet water containing feces, moldy water, flood water, and backed up sewers are all examples of category 3 water. All porous materials affected by category 3 water must be removed, or encapsulated as we cannot guarantee the sanitization of any porous materials affected by category 3 water. Remember to let the experts at SERVPRO of Greater Waco asses the category of your water damage as quickly as possible.

  • Identify any sensitive valuables such as electronics, computers, paintings, document, or other art objects that can be safely moved
