According to the National Fire Protection Agency, space heaters cause about a third of all winter house fires and 80 percent of winter heating fire deaths.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 25,000 residential fires are caused by space heaters.  While they are an economical means of heating smaller spaces and providing supplemental heat, they can be incredibly dangerous.  Make sure to follow these safety tips for a fire free winter.

-Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable objects.

-When purchasing a space heater, look for one with an automatic safety shutoff that prevents it from overheating.

-Unplug space haters when not in use.

-Make sure to inspect space heaters power chords and avoid using one with a damaged cord.

-Always place space heaters on flat, level ground.

-Consider purchasing a space heater with a tip over protection system that will turn off the heater if it gets tipped over.

-Never leave a space heater unattended while sleeping or around children.

-Look for space heaters with a cool touch feature.  This prevents burns if someone accidently brushes up against the heater or while trying to move the unit.

-Adjustable thermostat heaters are great for keeping a space comfortable and safe.

-Keep space heaters out of high traffic areas like walkways and doorways.

-Make sure to read the owner’s manual when purchasing a new space heater.

-Do not plug space heaters into extension cords or power strips.

-Check the label and make sure your space heater has been tested by a nationally recognized testing lab.  Underwriters Laboratory (UL) is the most common.

-Make sure to not step on the cord and do not run it under rugs, bedding or other furniture.

-Always keep space heaters away from water to prevent shocks or a potential electrical fire.

-To prevent overheating, only use the space heater for short periods of time.

-Only use space heaters to heat a space.  Make sure to not attempt to dry clothing, cook or ignite other materials.
